Types of Railway Services

Further, In order to streamline the functioning of the railway system and ensure efficient operations in the Indian Railways, the services are categorised into different groups based on the nature of the job and the level of responsibility. As of now following are the main groups of services in the Indian Railways:

Group A Services: These are considered the highest-ranking services in the Indian Railways and are recruited through the Civil Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Some of the prominent Group A services include the 

  • Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS), 
  • Indian Railway Accounts Service (IRAS), 
  • Indian Railway Personnel Service (IRPS), 
  • Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE), 
  • Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME)
  • Indian Railway Service of Stores (IRSS) and more 

However, these services have been merged under one umbrella called the Indian railway management services(IRMS).

Group B Services: Group B services comprise various managerial and supervisory roles, and recruitment to these services is done through promotion from Group C services or through direct recruitment in specific categories. Group B services are associated with operational, administrative, and technical functions.

Group C Services: Group C services include a wide range of technical and non-technical positions. These positions involve clerical, technical, and support staff roles such as Ticket Collectors, Clerks, Technicians, Section Engineers, Junior Engineers, and more.

Group D Services: The Group D category includes positions for various skilled and semi-skilled workers, such as Track Maintainers, Gatemen, Helpers, and other positions that are crucial for day-to-day operations and maintenance of railway infrastructure.

As of now, the Indian Railways is divided into 17 zones, each responsible for a designated geographical area. Below is the list of railway zones along with their headquarters:

RRBs In Indian Railway

RRB stands for "Railway Recruitment Board." It is a government organisation in India responsible to conduct recruitment examinations for Group C posts, evaluating candidates' eligibility, and facilitating the selection process for different posts in the Indian Railways.

As of now, there are 21 Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) in India, each responsible for recruiting candidates for various railway jobs in their respective regions. Here is the list of RRBs along with their official website URLs:

RRCs In Indian Railway

RRC stands for "Railway Recruitment Cell." RRC is a dedicated cell that operates under each zonal railway and is responsible for the recruitment of candidates for various Group D (Level 1) positions in the Indian Railways. These Group D positions include roles like Track Maintainers, Gatemen, Helpers, Porter, Pointsman, and various other technical and non-technical posts.
